Is Yet Another Zombie Survivors the same as Yet Another Zombie Defense?
No. Defense is an earlier Awesome Games Studio tower-defense title. This beginner guide covers Survivors (Steam app 2163330) only.
This Yet Another Zombie Survivors beginner guide is for your first session of Yet Another Zombie Survivors by Awesome Games Studio: pick a Leader, move while Survivors auto-aim, spend XP, answer SOS beacons (squad max three), open item chests, then spend Training between runs. Not the older tower-defense title Yet Another Zombie Defense. Verified August 21, 2026 · Steam app 2163330.

Create a profile, enter the Camp hub when available, then start a Default arena with one of the three starters. Your only job in the first five minutes is learning movement pacing — Survivors aim and shoot for you.

SWAT teaches ranged kinetic and explosion tools. Tank teaches armor and heavy firepower. Engineer teaches electric control and turret placement. Any of them can carry early arenas; switching every run is fine because Training respecs are free.
Version 1.0 adds Survivors' Camp, Main Story Missions, Survivor Missions, and Rank 5. Treat Camp as the hub between runs, not a tutorial wall — finish one arena first, then browse Mission Log so you know which kill/time goals pay Friendship and story progress.
Next you need the control mental model: you are the feet, not the trigger finger.
You control movement (and camera framing on some platforms). Survivors auto-aim, auto-fire, and fire Abilities on their own cooldowns. Manual aim exists as an advanced option for some builds, but beginners should stay on auto until chests and SOS feel automatic.
| You control | Squad handles | Beginner rule |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning / kiting | Aim + primary fire | Keep gems in pickup range without eating elites |
| When to walk into SOS | Ability casts on cooldown | Rescue when the beacon is safe, not mid-boss |
| Chest pick choice | Weapon auto-attacks | Pick tags that match the Leader |
| Whether to chase faded XP | Reload / magazines | Arrows on-screen beat greed |
Early runs drop temporary buffs such as short invulnerability, squad move-speed, and fire-rate spikes (reload may stay unchanged). They fade if you kite too far. Gold arrow markers usually point to magnets, hearts, and special chests — follow them before the timer dies.
The Survivor you start as is the Leader and grants the full Leader Perk. Rescued Survivors typically grant about half of their Leader Perk value while in the squad. Rank on a Survivor as Leader later doubles perk strength and unlocks more power-up options — see upgrades.
With controls clear, the next decision surface is the level-up menu.
Every level opens a pick of power-ups, weapon steps, or Ability upgrades. Early, prefer clear damage or survivability over niche multipliers you cannot read yet.
| Situation | Prefer | Avoid for now |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes 0–5 | Weapon tier ups, area clear, move speed | Glass cannon items before you know elite timing |
| First Elite pack | Burst / boss-tag tools | Pure economy picks mid-fight |
| Full squad (3) | Synergy-enabling picks | Tripling one dead tag |
| Low HP + chest | Regen / armor / dodge | Banishing everything except damage |
Many Abilities later offer two Evolution branches. You do not need every Evolution on run one — take the branch that matches the tags already on your weapons (Fire, Ice, Chemical, Explosive, Electric, Kinetic). Exact Evolution DPS is TBA; trust readable labels over guide myths.
If the run gives rerolls or ban options, spend them to remove junk from the pool before greed-picking every shiny. That habit pays off when farming rare chest items such as Potato stacks — details on items and potato.
XP choices get stronger once a second Survivor joins through SOS.
During a run, SOS beacons appear so you can recruit additional Survivors. The squad caps at three total. Rescue roles that cover gaps in your Leader's tags — damage, sustain, or synergy partners — not just the first name you recognize.

Huntress unlocks relatively early (survive 15 minutes in Isolated City on public wiki notes). Ghost asks for 100 Boss kills cumulative. Medic is a health-pickup achievement (wiki often ~100 — older posts say 200; trust the in-game UI). Pyro needs an elemental damage quota. Mechanic is listed around ~4,000 Ability activations on wiki notes — verify live. Ranger (1.0 ninth Survivor) is Survival Level 175 in public notes. Roster hub: survivors.
Beacons are progress, not mandatory side quests. If your HP is already paper, kite first, then rescue. A dead squad with two empty slots is worse than a living duo.
Chests are the other mid-run build lever — treat them like a second level-up menu.

Item chests spawn in the arena (often with gold markers). Opening one usually offers a pick-one choice among several items. Some items stack; many runs limit how many you can hold outside Infinite modes.

| Chest habit | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Match tags to weapons | Fire/Ice/Chemical/Explosive items amplify the kit you already leveled |
| Take sustain when low | A dead DPS build drops all future chests |
| Ban / reroll junk | Shrinks the pool for rare picks like Potato |
| Skip greed mid-boss | Boss telegraphs beat one more item |
Some chests stay available longer than temporary buffs. If a marker remains after a fight, clear space, then open. Do not open while standing inside spitters or worm telegraphs on later arenas.
Between arenas you spend Training Points on General Training and Survivor specialization trees, raise Rank by leading Survivors, earn Badges, complete Missions, and eventually touch Prestige and Torments.

| Meta system | Beginner action |
|---|---|
| General Training | Put one point in prerequisite rows before deep spending |
| Specialization | Points accrue when the Survivor is in the squad — not only as Leader |
| Rank | Lead a Survivor to raise Rank; perk strength and unlocks improve |
| Missions (1.0) | Clear easy Camp missions for Friendship and story |
| Respec | Reset Training anytime — experiment without fear |
Some Training lines improve pickup radius / “happiness” style magnets so hearts and temporary buffs stream in more reliably. Early investment here often feels better than stacking one damage node you cannot afford prerequisites for.
Boss Rush, One Hit, high Torments, and Prestige resets are post-basics goals. Unlock arenas like Vile Wasteland, Dead Terminal, and Bio Lab through the mode/map gates on maps, then return here for Training order on upgrades.
Before you queue the next run, scrub the mistake list below.
Most early wipe loops are habit problems, not missing “secret” DPS numbers.
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Standing still to “aim” | You only need to move — auto-fire handles aim |
| Ignoring Training prerequisites | Unlock upper rows before deep branches |
| Rescuing SOS into a wipe | Clear elites first, then rescue |
| Taking every chest greed option | Ban/reroll toward your tags |
| Never respecing Training | Reset and try a sustain-first tree |

Yes — it is a single-player squad game. You still field up to three Survivors inside one run.
Public notes say rescued perks are partial (about half). Lead the Survivor yourself to train Rank and full perk value.
Nine — see survivors. Ranger is the ninth unlock.
